They are flat glass with the optic mechanism placed either under it or above it. Then there is the plain or traditional scanner that involves placing the paper inside for it to be scanned and spewed out when done, like a photocopying machine. Another is the handheld or the &#8216;gun&#8217; scanner. It has an optical mechanism which activates when the trigger is pulled. However, it has to be placed very close to the object before it can read properly.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The handheld can be clumsy as the wires can get entangled with things. Some impatient people don&#8217;t like this, so the wireless barcode scanner was developed for mobility or simply for recording data into another wireless computer like a PDA. For one thing, it is easier to move to the object to be scanned rather than have the object brought to you. There are even some wireless that can read partially torn data which makes it invaluable.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Just like anything that is new and high tech, a wireless barcode scanner can be expensive. There are some models that employ technology from patented technology and that can increase the cost considerably. It would be best to really think about what your needs are before you decide to buy anything. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;">As a long-time public sector Chief Information Officer I have always focused on building community-not just building bedrooms. Several years ago, we identified three goals. The first was to lay out a plan that would bring our city onto the playing field with the top &#8220;connected&#8221; cities in the nation. The second was to create increased competition among technology providers in our metropolitan edge community. And our third goal was to position homes in the city for a future of ultra high-speed Internet, futuristic digital and high definition television and entertainment and mobile communications.</p>
<p><span id="more-77"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The result included one of the most comprehensive municipal technology projects in the nation. Our projects addressed a broad range of community technologies including broadband, Wi-Fi, digital television and cellular wireless. By looking at the total community technology spectrum, we are not trying to get a point product (such as Wi-Fi) to meet all our citizens&#8217; needs. We are looking for multifaceted solutions to meet a wider range of citizens&#8217; needs.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Over the years we developed some leading edge technologies (for their time). We were one of the first cities in Arizona to convert to a total VOIP (Voice over IP) converged communications system, we embraced key technologies such as a internally developed electronic permitting system, and we developed a state of the art data center. We developed many citizen oriented services such as providing information about their address from multiple public data sources. And we provided an extensive look into our financial systems provided by public monies. Many of our initiatives were designed to fulfill our goal of providing citizens and our employees with advanced technology and communication in the medium of their choice.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In the middle of our innovation binge (now tempered with a struggling economy), I asked myself a few rhetorical questions: Why are leading-edge projects so hard to understand? What does it take for staff and other management see the light? Why does everyone (or so it seems) fight the project? As I looked back across my 25+ years in IT some of my more innovative initiatives-large and small, successful and failed-I identified some common patterns that I call &#8220;The Four Truths.&#8221;</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Truth #1: Innovation is change</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Change and innovation walk on the same path. Change and innovation threaten the status quo and upset the apple cart. The American public loves innovation, except when it surfaces in their own backyards. My own staff was uneasy with some of the projects and how it might change their roles. They were fearful that a project would be thrust at them on top of their already burdensome workload. As we rolled out some of the larger projects, we started to understand how our role would be one of oversight rather than hands-on in the trenches installation. Change management would continue to be an educational process, not just from the tactical and operational aspects, but also from the strategic value that such a project would bring to the City.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Truth#2: The road will be blocked</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Every innovation effort includes a series of roadblocks that attempt to keep us from our stated goals. It is too easy to listen to the naysayer&#8217;s and critics. Successful project managers are those who forge a path over, around or through the roadblocks.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Truth #3: Innovation without implementation is merely a dream</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Our quest for innovation has taught me that many visionaries have great dreams, but few can bring those dreams to fruition. Some of our projects were hard to implement, but perseverance and hard work by a team of brilliant technicians led to completion. Many of the projects had to bring diverse stakeholders together and I sometimes find that keeping a project in focus and on track is harder than actually doing the project.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Truth#4: Innovation without marketing is soon be forgotten</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Marketing is not just about selling a product; it&#8217;s about selling a concept. It&#8217;s about convincing stakeholders that you can see their future and that the idea will satisfy their needs and enhances their lives. As CIOs we have all seen superior products fall by the wayside because marketing was weak or ineffective or because the competitor&#8217;s marketing was superior.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Marketing must be pursued throughout the entire innovation process. You must market the idea in order to bring it to the table. Once the idea is introduced, you market to the stakeholders and customers, and then to the press and the media. After roll-out, you must continue marketing to the customers to make sure the products or services deliver on your promises. Communication of the project vision has its ups and downs. Sometimes, our senior management team had to be convinced how their departments could be impacted by the project.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">When it comes to innovation, there&#8217;s one foundational trait underlying all these truths-persistence. Bertrand Russell said &#8220;No great achievement is possible without persistence.&#8221; None of the actions we are seeking to take will happen without people persisting through all of the roadblocks that life throws at us.</p>

<p>The child puts in a great deal of effort going through the daily positive brainwashing process of learning the letters of the alphabet; a-for-apple, b-for-ball, c-for-cat&#8230; until finally all twenty-six are imprinted in his or her mind in the correct order and a world of reading and writing awaits. A lot of the latter part of this world will be explored using word processing packages such as Microsoft Word, and children these days are introduced to these programs at an early age.</p>
<p>The child&#8217;s first encounter with a computer, however, can be something of a shock. Setting eyes on the keyboard for the first time, the child is aghast to discover that none of the letters are in their correct places; it is as though someone has made a huge anagram of the alphabet, and everything the child has learned has flown out of the window. Gingerly the child sets about typing using this unusual new arrangement, with curled index finger and protruding tongue a typing speed of 3 &#8211; 5 words per minute is reached using the hunt and peck method. Of course, with practice the child can soon become proficient in using the keyboard, but why are the keys laid out in this alphabet soup fashion in the first place? The answer lies way back in the days of the very first typewriters.</p>
<p>In the late 1860s, an American inventor by the name of Christopher Scholes developed the first rudimentary typewriter with a group of associates. The keys on this early machine were originally laid out in alphabetical order, but this led to problems with the type bars jamming when typing at speed. To remedy this, Scholes relocated the keys with the aim of keeping the most frequently used letters apart, and the result is the QWERTY keyboard.</p>
<p>Not long after this, however, improvements in typewriter design put an end to the jamming problem, so technically the QWERTY system was no longer necessary, yet it has survived even into the computer age, where there are no type bars to jam.</p>
<p>It does have its rivals, however, the best known of which is the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard, which was patented by August Dvorak in Seattle in 1936. This layout was to challenge, but never conquer QWERTY, despite having several advantages over it, such as simplicity to learn, increased comfort when typing and favouring the right hand.</p>
<p>Although this layout bears no resemblance to the familiar QWERTY, it can be mastered in a short time, and it is worth pointing out that the world record for typing speed, held by the late Barbara Blackburn who reached a peak speed of a staggering 212 words per minute, was achieved using the Dvorak system. The Dvorak Simplified Keyboard is available on all major operating systems, but, despite well-founded claims of superiority in accuracy and ease of use it has failed to dislodge the stubborn QWERTY layout.</p>
<p>So, having survived for well over a hundred years, does the QWERTY layout on the modern computer keyboard have anything more to offer than that of early typewriters? Well, yes and no.</p>
<p>The keys are all in the same places, of course, but it takes far less effort to type than it did on a manual typewriter. But the real difference lies in the many symbols and special characters that can be inserted into documents using keyboard shortcuts that there would be simply no room for on a typewriter. Open Microsoft Word and check them out by clicking Insert/Symbol, and browse the many menus. You will see that there is a vast array of symbols and characters at your disposal, from the generally used arrows, ticks and foreign currency symbols, to fun ones that include a smiley face, skull and crossbones, yin and yang, and, for those festive letters, that guy in the red suit.</p>
<p>You can create your own keyboard shortcuts quite easily for these characters, which means that those you use regularly can be typed straight onto the page, adding impact to important documents, and fun to less formal ones. When you consider that some typewriters could only print an exclamation mark by typing apostrophe, back space, full stop, you can see how far we have come.</p>
<p>It is worth taking the time, perhaps through a training course, to explore the hidden world of Microsoft Word. There are many other features that this powerful tool has to offer.</p>

<p>Before diving into software coding, you should have a broad architectural plan for your application. Keep in mind that an application&#8217;s architecture is distinctly different from the network architecture. From the application developer&#8217;s perspective, the network architecture is fixed and provides a specific set of services to applications. The application architecture, on the other hand, is designed by the application developer and dictates how the application is structured over the various end systems. In choosing the application architecture, an application developer will likely draw on one of the two predominant architectural paradigms used in modern network applications: the client-server architecture or the peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture.</p>
<p><span id="more-19"></span></p>
<p>In a client-server architecture, there is an always-on host, called the server, which services requests from many other hosts, called clients. The client hosts can be either sometimes-on or always-on. A classic example is the Web application for which an always-on Web server services requests from browsers running on client hosts. When a Web server receives a request for an object from a client host, it responds by sending the requested object to the client host. Note that with the client- server architecture, clients do not directly communicate with each other; for example, in the Web application, two browsers do not directly communicate. Another characteristic of the client-server architecture is that the server has a fixed, well- known address, called an IP address (which we&#8217;ll discuss soon). Because the server has a fixed, well-known address, and because the server is always on, a client can always contact the server by sending a packet to the server&#8217;s address. Some of the better-known applications with a client-server architecture include the Web, F1&#8242;R Telnet, and e-mail.</p>
<p>Often in a client-server application, a single server host is incapable of keeping up with all the requests from its clients. For example, a popular social-networking site can quickly become overwhelmed if it has only one server handling all of its requests. For this reason, a cluster of hosts-sometimes referred to as a server farm-is often used to create a powerful virtual server in client-server architectures. Application services that are based on the client-server architecture are often infrastructure intensive, since they require the service providers to purchase, install, and maintain server farms. Additionally, the service providers must pay recurring interconnection and bandwidth costs for sending an4 receiving data to and from the Internet. Popular services such as search engines (e.g., Google), Internet commerce (e.g., Amazon and e-Bay), Web- based v-mail (e.g, Yahoo Mail), social networking (e.g., MySpace and Facebook), and video sharing (e.g., YouTube) are infrastructure intensive and costly to provide.</p>
<p>In a P2P architecture, there is minimal (or no) reliance on always-on infrastructure servers. Instead the application exploits direct communication between pairs of intermittently connected hosts, called peers. The peers are not owned by the service provider, but are instead desktops and laptops controlled by users, with most of the peers residing in homes, universities, and offices. Because the peers communicate without passing through a dedicated server, the architecture is called peer-to-peer. Many of today&#8217;s most popular and traffic-intensiye applications are based on P2P architectures. These applications include file distribution (e.g., BitTorrent), file searching/sharing (e.g., eMule and LimeWire), Intemet telephony (e.g., Skype), and IPTV (e.g., PPLive).</p>
